Update
NEWS- UPDATE, August/Sept, 2008.
The season is continuing “damp”, whilst not exactly “wet”, but is much more acceptable then “dry”!! Max and Lachlan made a last minute decision to go to Warwick for the Qld ASH Show Championships-taking a weanling colt –Glencoe Wildcard and a yearling filly-Glencoe Evolution. Both had been turned out without rugs, so looked more like they should be going to the “Winter Woolies”!! Both placed up in their classes, Glencoe Evolution and Gwen MacMillans’ Glencoe Resolution placed 2nd in the Progeny pair- full siblings, and then joined the Ware families’ Wungum Citizen to take out the Progeny Trio – all sired by Glencoe Abstract!! Jim Daley showed Glencoe Resolution for Gwen MacMillan and then Resolution won the Led 2 year old Colt, Working 2 yr old Colt, and the Colt 2 yr old Hack. Wungum Citizen then went on to win Supreme Champion Led Exhibit of the Show – so all in all, Glencoe Abstract had a pretty good Show, even though he was at home, rugged up in his paddock!
It has been a busy couple of months, with a trip to Mudgegonga-near Myrtleford, Victoria, for the marriage of Michael Glasser and his companion of the last couple of years-Marion Webb- on the 9th August. Despite the cold- about 4 degrees being the average- it was a wonderful couple of days. And what a horse mad family this union has created!! Our wedding gift to them was a lovely black weanling filly- Glencoe Legal Affair. This filly carries Heritage Stockhorse bloodlines, being by Struggletown Legal Agent and from a Torres Park bred mare-all campdraft winning bloodlines, and she’s a good looker as well!!
We arrived home just in time for our 1st foal to arrive- a filly, only 23 days early, but not showing any ill effects for this untimely entry into the world. As the Olympics were raging, and this was a particularly attractive filly, full of personality, she has earned the name of Glencoe Trickett, and she is a full sister to our $6,250 filly sold at Toowoomba in June, Glencoe Superstition. The next foal to arrive , was a chestnut colt-Glencoe Moonlighter, arriving right on the due date 29th, August, from Torres Moonlight-both by Glencoe Abstract. Torres Moonlight, is an aged mare rich in campdraft winning bloodlines, sourced from Ashley and Doris Mckay. A very attractive black colt with interesting white markings-Glencoe Thorn- by Glencoe Last Word and from the maiden mare, Torres Gucci Rose, arrived on the 11th September. On the due date-19th September-Jays Slick Chick delivered an outstanding colt by Glencoe Abstract- Glencoe High Roller. We believe he will be bay/brown with lovely markings and even as he arrived it was obvious that he had the “wow” factor!! “Georgia Jean” a mare belonging to Robyn Boltitude delivered a colt foal on the 29th September. So far 4 colts and only 1 filly- this an about turn after the 2007 foaling of 14 fillies and 4 colts!!! All of these foals can be seen on “Images”, on this site with their proud mums. Only another 13 mares to go! We are fortunate to have a good crop of oats and barley for the mares, and the mares are milking on it like jersey cows, so the foals are off to a good start.
After a hiatus of 17 months, Lachlan took Glencoe Clue and Abstract to the Bell campdraft towards the end of August, and despite scoring 3 x 83 point runs, didn’t qualify for a final. It was very good campdrafting, and a credit to those who were organizing the event.
Max has been busy with what were the “weanlings”-now the “yearlings”. Three colts, 1 gelding and 13 fillies are now all looking much more like stockhorses with their manes removed, and feet trimmed-if only they would loose their winter wooly coats!! As the green feed comes through, the old hair lifts and sits like a blanket on their backs- the ground is covered with where they have decided to have a roll. And so the wheel turns. The three colts, one gelding and 9 fillies are being prepared for Sale at Toowoomba on 14th March at the “Select for the Future” Yearling and Broodmare Sale, and at Albury in April 2009. The four fillies being retained will be in preparation for the 2009 Shows. Keep an eye out for photos of these youngsters show and sale youngsters elsewhere on our website. We realize how fortunate we are to be foaling so many mares this year, after the intervention of the EI virus last prevented many breeders from joining even one mare.
Alan Wallen and Glencoe Black Jack put up a good show at Melbourne Royal for owner David Nott, when they took out Champion ASH Stallion ,a Reserve Champion, placed third in a Time Trial, and won a Ridden class amongst other awards. Black Jack will now remain in Victoria to cover some mares for the 2008 breeding season- a great opportunity for the southern breeders to get some new blood. That’s about all the news for the time being, all the best until next month-from all at Glencoe Stockhorses.
