GLENCOE ABSTRACT 2008

NEWS-UPDATE

APRIL 2010

Almost one third of the year gone-where? April has been a busy time for us, planting oats/barley for the weanlings and broodmares-although they are certainly not in need of it at the moment. We were fortunate enough in early April to score 35 mls of rain in two falls after we had planted some crop-it is all up and looking great at the present time.

The improved pasture we’ve planted and the native Qld blue grass are running rampant, and seeding madly-some photos of this grass in our Far East paddock are here for you to admire-12 months ago this country was bare and covered with the stumps of black pine.  It gave us plenty to do, pushing the stumps out, then burning them, before planting it down to pasture-luckily for us,we have had a wonderful summer of rain for establishing this pasture. Also, with less horses on hand, we have been able to close up several paddocks and allow the grass to seed and drop on a  few occasions.

Back in February we had two lovely ladies visit to admire the horses and the roses. Marie Killen and Gene Makim- both originally from the border areas around Goondiwindi-posed in part of the Garden with Max-as pictured here. Gene is well known in the horse world, having been born into the famous Scott family, has written and photographed for  the Equestrian section of the Land Newspaper for many years, as well as writing several books on horses, horsemen and women.

Well, we did make it to the Sydney Royal, and had a wonderful time. 16 year old Christopher Ware did us proud when he and  his Glencoe Abstract gelding-Wungum Citizen-placed several times, won the Working Gelding class and then went on to blitz the the open competition to win Champion ASH Working Horse of the Show! They repeated this performance at the Toowoomba Royal this last week.

This 5 year old bay/brown gelding is one of several Abstract foals bred by David and Mandy Ware, and has been broken in and educated entirely by Christopher. In the last couple of years this combitation has been succesfull on many occasion with many Championships to their credit, with wins at Branch and Ag Shows. Recently, Christoher and Citizen placed 3rd in a ‘draft as well. Another Abstract gelding-2 year old Wungum Quartz- also won his Led class at Sydney Royal, and placed 2nd in the under 4 yr old Working Class at Toowoomba Royal with Christopher once again in the saddle. Christopher also had considerable success with his first Abstract progeny , a bay mare -Wungum Quest- who has been  retired to breed some more champions! Younger brother, Lachlan, is also claiming his share of Royal Show ribbons with his homebred gelding-Wungum Lone Oak-taking out Best Of Show Led Gelding.

Photo of Max with Christopher and  Wungum Citizen after their big win in Sydney. At first, Citizen felt he should try and eat his garland, and thought of pigrooting as he cantered off with his trophy rug-the leg straps were a little too neat!! However, his wonderful manners and attitude prevailed and he moved off, ever the perfect gentleman!

Shane, Janet and Scott Everingham had their 2 year old  Glencoe Last Word filly-Glencoe Posh in Sydney, also. Although she placed 6th in her Led Class, she did place first in the Young Judges class, judged later in the Show by David Wilson. Apparently, Posh has had an almost unbeaten record lead up to Sydney, and has broken in beautifully. It was our first meeting with this young family, although we had spoken on the phone and emailed one another since they had acquired Posh.15 year old  Scott had a win on another of their horses in the Junior Time Trial-we watched this class, and believe me those youngster who scored ribbons here were first class!! Their two much younger boys seemed far more interested in the fire sprouting monster that consumed cars in the main arena-although I am sure it will only be a matter of time before they, too, are competing seriously.

Currently, we have the  3 year old filly- Glencoe Evolution, and 2 year old colt-Glencoe Saab, in work for a few upcoming Futurities and the Brisbane Royal.  Both are by Abstract and are working kindly. Saab is a full brother to Kim & Jo Stewart-Grey very successful young colt, Glencoe Benz. A yearling filly-Glencoe Trick or Treat- is currently in feed, and is a full sister to these two, whilst we will soon wean another full sister, Glencoe Mercedes.

Weaning is only a month away, and a lovely paddock of improved pasture has been locked up for these babies-two by Abstract and two by Last Word. So the cycle keeps rolling, and in due course, the next 10 mares will foal for us.

We trust that you are also enjoying an abundant season-they are so few and far between! Maybe we are having a return to the wonderful seasons of the 1950s’!! One can only hope.

March 2010.

Wow-where has the 2010 gone-March already!! And the grass here at Glencoe Lodge is so tall, lush and green!!  February was ok for rain with 60 mls, but so far for March we’ve measured 173 mls-mostly gentle, soaking rain-what a start for the winter. Several paddocks have been unstocked, and another lot of improved pasture has been sown into the natural grasses.  Green panic feet high, creeping bluegrass, finecut Rhodes grass, and natural bluegrass have all seeded, so hopefully we will have a body of grass to mulch down in that country.

Our broodmares are in disgusting condition-so fat- and their foals have lovely fat “apple bums”- so wonderful to see. We have riding horses locked up 22 hours a day to try and prevent founder-no doubt, it’s a feast or a famine.  The 10 mares joined to foal this spring are beautifully dappled, whilst the   four mares with foals are looking magnificent, also. This year we will not be in a hurry to wean the foals !!

Glencoe Evolution-a 3 year old, and her full sister-Glencoe Absolution-a 6 year old- have both had a couple of months of mustering at Cardowan with Phillip Matthews-he was very happy with their attitudes and ability. More recently, Glencoe Saab-a just two year old colt-broken in by Lachlan prior to Christmas, has had 6 weeks of slow work with Phillip, also.

Quite a few outside mares have arrived this year to be joined with both Abstract and Last Word-in fact mares are still arriving!!  It has given us-as breeders- a wonderful feeling of achievement to see so many return breeders sending mares, as well as newcomers. Makes us feel that our lives have not been wasted when we see other Stockhorse breeders winning with progeny of Glencoe horses.

Libby Lynch-a young vet, who moves between Scone and Charters Towers-has been having a ball with her Abstract mare-Abilene.  Christopher Ware, from Tamworth, with the 5 year old  Wungum Citizen and 2 year old Wungum Quartz-both geldings, and both by Abstract- has been having a wonderful run of success right across the board.  This team will be competing at Sydney Royal  this year.  Also qualified for Sydney is Glencoe Posh-by Glencoe Last Word- and Janet and Shane Everingham are stoked with her in every way.  This young couple paid $12,250 for this filly-then 16 months old- at our Glencoe Sale, March 2009.  Needless to say, our airfares and accommodation are booked, so that we can be there for the ASH classes at Sydney, 2010!!!

We recently advertised-and sold- our gooseneck that has taken us over the last 10 years to many parts of Australia.  We have been to Victoria several times, including Melbourne Royal, and “across the paddock” to the 2005 Perth Royal. We have also made the trek to Charters Towers on two occasions, and many points in between.

As I close, the sky is a mixture of grey cloud, blue sky and some mist-very much a reflection of life itself!  Trusting that you have had your share of this wonderful rain-but not too much- and wishing you and your horses all the very best.
